Have hail damage? Ensure your contractor is licensed by the City
Published on August 04, 2025
As cleanup continues from the Aug. 1, 2025, hailstorm that affected many parts of Cheyenne, property owners should ensure any contractors that are hired are licensed to work in Cheyenne and building permits are pulled for individual properties.
The City’s licensing and permitting system helps ensure property owners know they are hiring reputable licensed contractors that follow building codes. Unlicensed contractors can expose property owners to several risks, including poor workmanship, lack of contractor insurance, and risks to the owner’s property or homeowners’ insurance policy. Unlicensed and unpermitted work can also have detrimental effects when a property is sold.
Information for property owners
Property owners should only hire contractors who are licensed by the City to perform the work in question. Licensed contractors have appeared before, and been approved by, the City’s Contractor Licensing Board.
Property owners can ask contractors to review their license and can also see a list of current approved roofing and siding contractors at www.cheyennecity.org/roofingcontractors.
When licensed contractors perform work on a property, City permits are pulled for the specific work involved. Property owners can ask to see proof of a permit from their contractor and can also contact the City’s Building Division to confirm the status of a permit at 307-637-6265.
In general, City permits are required for the following work:
- New buildings
- Additions (Bedrooms, bathrooms, family rooms, etc.)
- Residential work (decks, garages, fireplaces, pools, water heaters, etc.)
- Renovations (garage conversions, basement furnishings, kitchen expansions, roofing, siding, etc.)
- Electrical systems
- Plumbing systems
- HVAC (heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning) systems
In addition, all door-to-door solicitors must be licensed by the City. Legal solicitors will be issued a City ID badge and are only permitted to conduct sales between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.
