Marian Orr was sworn in as Cheyenne’s first female Mayor on January 3, 2017. Raised in Casper, Wyoming, Mayor Orr graduated from the University of Wyoming and has been a Cheyenne resident since 1993.
Wyoming-raised with deep Cheyenne roots, Mayor Orr has dedicated her time and service to making the community a better place to live, work, and play. Even before she had children of her own, she volunteered her time to coach Cheyenne youth soccer. As a young parent, she worked with her neighbors and city officials to turn an undeveloped and unsightly piece of land into what is now a park and playground that continues to be enjoyed by families from across Cheyenne.
Later, Mayor Orr served on the program evaluation team for United Way, where she learned of — not only — the great needs within the community, but the network of services provided to Cheyenne’s most vulnerable populations. Marian is a former Board of Trustee for Cheyenne Regional Medical Center.
As a lobbyist for over 20 years, Mayor Orr has represented a wide variety of interests from our libraries, our medical community, mental health community, and defending our hunting and fishing opportunities – to name a few.
Strong Wyoming Roots
Mayor Orr's great-grandparents founded Kassis Department Store in the 1920’s in what is now, unfortunately, a condemned cornerstone in downtown Cheyenne (formerly the Z’s building). Her grandparents later opened a Casper location, and that is where Mayor Orr learned the importance of being a solid and reliable downtown business owner and community supporter.
She grew up working after school and weekends in the family store before attending and graduating from the University of Wyoming. She learned the importance of customer service, and never judging a book by its cover. Shortly after graduation, she moved to Cheyenne and started her own lobbying/political consulting firm, working primarily from home to raise two children.
Marian’s daughter, Katie Schulz, is a recent law school graduate from the University of Colorado Boulder and her son, Jack Schulz, is an undergraduate student at the University of Wyoming.
