City offers info on storm damaged trees and branch pickup services

With a spring snowstorm producing significant wet snow this week, the City of Cheyenne’s Urban Forestry Division and Sanitation Division are offering information on tree care and branch pickup for residents.

Tree Care

Urban Forestry is offering the following tips on how to prevent tree damage from heavy snow and how to care for trees that have been damaged after snow events.

• During the storm, shake the branches to remove the heavy snow from trees and shrubs that have leafed out. If the storm is prolonged, consider shaking your trees every several hours.
• Once the storm has passed, inspect the canopy of your trees for cracked, torn, broken, or hanging limbs. These hazardous limbs can fall from the canopy and cause harm or damage to people and property. If you have broken limbs that are still attached to the tree, remove them by using a pruner, loppers or a hand saw. Use the 3-cut method to avoid further damaging the tree. Do not tear the branch off, this will further damage the tree. If you suspect there are hazardous limbs in your trees and cannot access them, consider contacting a licensed arborist to further inspect your trees and offer advice. • If you have a damaged tree, remember to give it plenty of supplemental water throughout the growing season. This will help provide the tree with the resources it needs to grow new foliage to replace what was lost as well as start sealing the wound site.

Branch Pickup

Broken limbs and other woody plant material can be taken to the City Compost Facility (3714 Windmill Road) for disposal or can be picked up curbside by the City’s Sanitation Division on select dates.

Branch pickups are offered during the yard waste program season, which runs from April to November. Residents who are subscribed to the yard waste program will receive the first cubic yard of branches collected free of charge. (Branches, tumbleweeds, and other woody material are NOT allowed in yard waste containers.)

Additional cubic yards and/or non-subscribers will be charged based on volume collected.

To schedule a pickup, please call 307-637-6440, option 0, to be placed on the next available branch pickup day.

Branch pickup is available on the following dates in 2026:

• May 21, 2026
• June 18, 2026
• July 16, 2026
• Aug. 20, 2026
• Sept. 17, 2026
• Oct. 15, 2026
• Nov. 19, 2026 (last pickup for season)

The Compost Facility will accept branches, brush, and logs shorter than 6 feet, and shorter than 10 inches in diameter. The Compost Facility is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is open on Sundays in the summer months for drop off only from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
