As Laramie County’s next 6th Penny election approaches in August 2026, the City of Cheyenne is providing residents with information about City projects the Governing Body has voted to place on this year’s ballot.

This week’s spotlight is on projects for the Cheyenne Police Department.

What is the project?

The Cheyenne Police Department will have two proposals on the 6th Penny ballot under the same proposition. The two proposals are below.

Digital Equipment and Technology

This project would replace and modernize in-car cameras, body-worn cameras, and electronic control devices, and include associated digital evidence storage and investigative software. The estimated cost of the project is $3.7 million over a five-year period.

Firearms Training

This project would result in construction of an enclosed training building with modular interior walls for simunitions-based training and resurfacing of the range deck to improve safety and usability. Simunitions are simulated ammunition. The estimated cost of the project is $1 million.

Why is this project needed?

The Cheyenne Police Department is continuing to work toward maintaining a modern and effective police force. Existing digital equipment and technology needs to be replaced to ensure it is up to date and support can be provided for software. The new Firearms Training facility will help provide CPD officers with a safe, realistic place to train for emergency response.

What will the project provide the community?

These proposals will help ensure the Cheyenne Police Department is equipped with up to date technology to ensure public safety in Cheyenne.
