A trail at the Belvoir Ranch.

More than 20 miles of hiking and biking trails will open to the public next week as the City of Cheyenne formally opens the Belvoir Ranch Open Space trail network.

A ribbon cutting is planned at the Belvoir Ranch trailhead on Wednesday, July 1, at 5:30 p.m. After the event, the trail system will be open daily from dawn to dusk.

In addition to travel by foot and traditional bikes, Class 1 (pedal assisted) e-bikes and mobility devices like wheelchairs are also allowed. Horses and other motorized vehicles are not permitted on the Belvoir trails.

The opening of the trail network marks a milestone for public access on the Belvoir Ranch. City Council previously identified access to the Belvoir as a goal. The initial phases of the trail system were funded through the Belvoir Recreation Fund and a Wyoming Office of Outdoor Recreation grant.

Future phases will continue to expand the trail network. Once access across the Union Pacific Railroad right of way can be achieved, the Belvoir trail system is planned to connect to the Red Mountain Open Space trail network in Larimer County, Colorado.

The Belvoir Ranch Open Space is a section of the overall Belvoir Ranch, a large property west of Cheyenne that is owned by the City. Usually included in reference to the Belvoir is an adjacent property known as the "Big Hole." Together, the properties total about 18,800 acres.

The City purchased the Belvoir Ranch in 2003 with the intent of a number of uses, including water, a potential landfill site, energy development, and recreation.

Since the purchase, the City has retained working ranch operations and leased the property for wind power operations. In 2008, the City adopted the Belvoir Ranch Master Plan to guide future development of the property and updated that plan again in 2024.

To reach the Belvoir Ranch Open Space trailhead from Cheyenne, take Interstate 80 west to Exit 342 (Harriman Road), then travel three miles south on Harriman Road before taking a left onto Old Quarry Road (this turn will be marked).
