The City of Cheyenne will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the completion of renovations to the Cheyenne Depot on Tuesday, May 13, at 1:30 p.m. at the Depot.

The $1.4 million project involved:

  • Development of a pedestrian patio on the southwest side of the building, complete with brick pavers, shade structures, tables, benches, and other amenities;
  • Renovation of the first floor restrooms;
  • Repair and replacement of the main lobby doors;
  • Upgrades to the exterior fencing along the Union Pacific Railroad;
  • Renovation of the kitchen area next to the Depot’s lobby to allow for catering or a concessionaire; and
  • Other smaller improvements.

“These renovations will help ensure the Depot continues to meet modern needs while retaining its importance as a major historic building in Cheyenne,” said Jason Sanchez, Community Recreation and Events director.

The renovation project was approved by City Council in September 2024 with Reiman Corp. as the contractor. Funding came from 6th Penny resources earmarked for projects in Downtown Cheyenne.

Construction of the Cheyenne Depot began in 1886 and the Depot served as the main passenger station for Cheyenne. It was built from sandstone quarried near Fort Collins, Colorado, and underwent expansions and renovations during its use as a passenger station.

After passenger service at the station ended, Union Pacific donated the building to the City of Cheyenne in the 1990s, and the building underwent a series of restoration and renovation projects later that decade and in the 2000s. The Cheyenne Depot is a focal point in Downtown Cheyenne and is listed as a National Historic Landmark.
