Sanitation truck in action

The City of Cheyenne Sanitation Division is reminding residents to properly fill recycling and yard waste containers and failure to do so may result in a contamination fee. These fees can also be applied to residents who place recyclable materials in plastic bags, which are not accepted.

Recycling Containers (Blue Lids)

Curbside recycling in Cheyenne is single-stream, meaning all recyclables can be placed loose into recycling containers. Recyclables should never be placed in plastic bags. Items that can be recycled in Cheyenne include:

  • Paper products: newspapers, books, junk mail, magazines, etc. (no window envelopes)
  • Brown paper bags
  • Clean cardboard (flatten & cut into 2'x2' pieces or smaller)
  • Cereal Boxes
  • Aluminum foil or tin cans
  • Plastic containers (#1, #2, #4 & #5 only – recycling numbers are found on the item’s packaging)
  • Glass food and beverage containers - brown, clear, or green

All items should be emptied and clean. Plastic sheeting, styrofoam, greasy cardboard, fast-food packaging, and food residue are not recyclable and cannot be placed in recycling containers.

Containers must be ready for pickup by 6 a.m. on the day of collection.

Yard Waste Containers (Green Lids)

The following items are permitted in residential yard waste containers:

  • Lawn trimmings
  • Weeds
  • Leaves
  • Pine needles
  • Pinecones

Yard waste containers with unacceptable items including bags (even paper yard bags), branches, tumbleweeds, dirt, mulch, sod, rocks, trash, or other items not included in the above list may not be serviced and are subject to a contamination fee.

Residents who subscribe to curbside yard waste service can place their green lid bins out by 6 a.m. on collection day. There is no alley collection for this program – bins must be placed on the street.

Branch pickup is available separate from yard waste and is the third Thursday of each month during the yard waste season. Pickup must be arranged by calling the Sanitation Division office in advance. Branches must be cut down to three feet in length, left unbundled, and placed for collection by 6 a.m. the day of pickup (and no earlier than 4 p.m. the day before). There is no additional charge for those with yard waste containers and others will be charged a fee per cubic yard.
