Faux railroad track in Cheyenne.

Three historic railcars will be installed for public display in an area along 15th Street next week, marking one of the first steps to build out the 15th Street Experience.

The railcars – two business/passenger cars and a Union Pacific caboose – will be delivered by truck from their current staging area in Carpenter and placed on faux track beginning Sunday, June 28, and continuing through Tuesday, June 30.

All three cars have had their exteriors restored and will be focal points to exhibit Cheyenne’s railroad heritage.

Residents and visitors should be aware of the installation and of the railcars being moved on city streets. The trucks carrying the railcars will travel via West Lincolnway and Thomes Avenue before arriving on 15th Street.

In addition, the parking area west of Gunslinger Square will be closed while installation takes place.

Funding for this phase of the project is through a federal Economic Development Administration grant and other City and Cheyenne Depot Museum funds.

The installation of the railcars is the first step in creating the 15th Street Experience, which will improve 15th Street from the Historic Depot to Bent Avenue through enhanced lighting, landscaping, and streetscape improvements with a focus on Cheyenne’s railroad history.

The railcars are among the first phases of this project due to their size and contribution to the overall project. Improvements to 15th Street can then be constructed around the railcars instead of placing the railcars after improvements are complete.

The 15th Street Experience was initially conceived around 2020 and draws from the Laramie County Tourism Master Plan, which highlighted railroad experiences to bring visitors to the region. A version of the project was included in a 2021 City Council goal for Downtown projects and was further refined in a 2024 goal. An initial plan was developed in 2021/2022, and the Master Plan for Phase 2 is still under design.

As planned, the overall 15th Street project will also see a net gain in parking, increase pedestrian and cyclist safety, and will eventually tie into future Greenway connections and the Reed Avenue Corridor Project.
