CFR prevents fire from escalating at Dunn Ave. business
Published on October 02, 2026
A fast response by Cheyenne Fire Rescue (CFR) kept a dumpster fire from turning into a major structure fire on Sept. 16, 2026. A joint investigation by CFR, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Cheyenne Police Department (CPD) then led to the arrest of a suspect less than 24 hours later.
Within four minutes of dispatch, CFR crews arrived at a reported building fire at Crash Collision, 1020 Dunn Ave. The first unit found a dumpster on fire next to the commercial building, with flames spreading into the structure. No one was inside the building.
Engine 1 extinguished the fire, while Ladder 1 searched the building for any occupants. Firefighters ventilated the building to clear heavy smoke, checked the structure for hidden fire, and contacted the building owner. No firefighters were injured.
"Our crews got water on this fire fast and stopped it before it could spread through the building," said Deputy Chief Glenn Rodgers. "That quick work protected a local business, and the teamwork that followed with our federal and local partners made sure the person of interest was found."
A CFR fire investigator responded to find out where and how the fire started. Because of the fire's potential criminal nature, CFR requested assistance from the local ATF fire investigator. An ATF special agent/certified fire investigator led the origin and cause investigation on Sept. 17, with CFR investigators supporting on scene.
The investigation team collaborated with the Cheyenne Police Department. CPD officers found and arrested the suspect less than 24 hours after the fire on Sept. 17.
"This case shows what happens when agencies work together," said Assistant Fire Marshal Shane Reed. "We're grateful to the ATF for its expertise and to the Cheyenne Police Department for finding the suspect so quickly. We also thank the business staff, whose help was essential to the investigation."
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the ATF at 888-283(ATF)-8477(TIPS)
Fire Prevention Reminder: CFR encourages businesses to keep dumpsters and recycling bins at least five feet from buildings when possible, keep them closed or locked, ensure the area around them has lighting, and report any suspicious activity.
