Applications open for Rooted in Cheyenne 2024 fall planting

Rooted in Cheyenne has opened online applications for its 2024 Fall Planting event, and city residents can apply for street trees to be planted on their properties.
This year’s fall planting date is Saturday, Sept. 21. Free trees are available to homeowners residing in this season’s “free tree area.” Homeowners meeting income guidelines may also be eligible for free trees. All other city residents can apply to purchase up to two trees for $50 each.
The fall 2024 free tree area covers properties in city limits south of the Union Pacific Railroad, east of Parsley Boulevard, north of College Drive, and west of South Greeley Highway. This includes a section of South Cheyenne, Harmony Meadows, and neighborhoods around and near Johnson Junior High School. Thanks to sponsorship from American Forests and funding from Microsoft, Rooted in Cheyenne will be providing 50 free trees in these neighborhoods that desperately need tree canopy.
Trees from Rooted in Cheyenne must be planted along the street or sidewalk to maximize benefits to the entire neighborhood. Once applications are submitted, Rooted in Cheyenne will conduct a site visit to confirm the tree(s) are suitable for the location. Approved applicants will then be able to select and purchase their tree(s) from a list of 12 tree species hardy to Cheyenne.

On planting day, Rooted in Cheyenne volunteers will plant trees and provide information to homeowners on proper tree care.
Members of the community over the age of 12 are encouraged to volunteer for the planting event by signing up at http://rootedincheyenne.com/events. Breakfast, lunch, and a T-shirt will be provided. Registration prior to the event is required. Volunteers will be paired up with local green industry professionals who will lead crews in planting 150 trees along Cheyenne’s streets.
