6th Penny Spotlight – Johnson Pool

A rendering of the new Johnson Pool

As Laramie County’s next 6th Penny election approaches in August 2026, the City of Cheyenne is providing residents with information about City projects the Governing Body has voted to place on this year’s ballot.

This final spotlight is on a project to construct a new Johnson Pool.

What is the project?

This ballot item would fund the construction of a new Johnson Pool in Lincoln Park in South Cheyenne. It would replace the old Johnson Pool, which closed in 2025 after more than 70 years in service.

The redesigned facility is expected to include:

  • New aquatic components and technology, reducing maintenance costs and increasing the amount of time the pool is operational;
  • Full ADA compliance, including pool access;
  • A bathhouse (locker rooms and associated facilities);
  • A concession stand;
  • Increased capacity for 200-300 users (the old Johnson Pool has a capacity of 80;
  • Recreational features, like slides and a lazy river; and
  • Zero-depth entry points to accommodate children and pool users of all abilities.

This project follows a $250,000 6th Penny project that voters approved in 2021 for planning, engineering, and design of a new Johnson Pool. This work has largely been completed.

Why is this project needed?

With the closure of the old Johnson Pool, no public outdoor pool facility exists in Cheyenne.

The old Johnson Pool was an important amenity for the community and served Cheyenne for more than 70 years, having been operational since 1954.

However, as the pool aged, maintenance became costly and even prevented the pool from opening as early in the season as possible. In 2024, the pool opening had to be delayed due to leaks and mandatory repair of the pool shell.

The facilities at Johnson Pool were dated and the size of the facility only allowed a maximum of 80 occupants, limiting use on high-demand days.

What will the project provide the community?

A new Johnson Pool would provide Cheyenne with the only outdoor public pool facility in the community and will remain in South Cheyenne. The new pool will have expanded amenities compared to the old Johnson Pool and will complement the City’s aquatics offerings at the Aquatic Center.

A new or expanded outdoor pool has been a long-time request of residents, a sentiment that was reflected in public outreach for the new pool’s design and in the City’s Parks and Greenway Master Plan.
