2026 6th Penny Spotlight – Fire Station #2
Published on April 15, 2026
As Laramie County’s next 6th Penny election approaches in August 2026, the City of Cheyenne is providing residents with information about City projects the Governing Body has voted to place on this year’s ballot.
This week’s spotlight is on Cheyenne Fire Rescue’s Fire Station #2 replacement.
What is the project?
This project will replace the existing Fire Station #2 on Fox Farm Road with a new facility on City-owned land near the intersection of South Greeley Highway and College Drive.
It will be similar to three new stations built using the 2021 6th Penny:
- Station #3, 720 Hanson St., near Nationway;
- Station #4, 6115 Countryside Ave., near Saddle Ridge; and
- Station #5, 4200 Converse Ave., near the Dutcher Baseball Complex.
Land for the station was acquired by the city in 2023, and the concept design was completed in 2025. The station is planned to have a 50-year lifespan, and the estimated cost of the project is $12 million.
If approved by voters, construction is planned to begin in Spring 2027.
Why is this project needed?
The existing Fire Station #2, built in 1985 amid different growth patterns in South Cheyenne, is more than 40 years old. The replacement station will be a modern facility strategically located to better serve South Cheyenne, the fastest-growing part of the city by square miles.
The new station will ensure proper response times for South Cheyenne now and into the future. The facility will also feature modern safety features to promote the health and safety of firefighters. These features include improved exhaust flow and decontamination areas to reduce the amount of hazardous materials firefighters encounter while on duty.
As Wyoming’s only municipal CPSE-accredited fire department, Cheyenne Fire Rescue maintains up-to-date planning documents that help determine where to plan for new and replacement fire stations. These documents outline growth patterns, development types, and road networks to enable CFR to operate as efficiently as possible and to provide professional and capable service 24/7 to residents of Cheyenne and the entire Laramie County region through mutual aid agreements.
What will the project provide the community?
The new fire station will improve Cheyenne Fire Rescue’s ability to respond to calls in South Cheyenne. The location near South Greeley and College firmly places South Cheyenne, including Sweetgrass and Harmony Valley, squarely in CFR’s four-minute drive time goal.
