Finding and Fixing Leaks

Often, leaks found around the house require only a few tools, some hardware and a do-it-yourself motivation to repair. Here is how to check your home for leaks.

How to Check for Leaks
  • Check your water use during December, January and February. During winter months, homes in Cheyenne use less than 2,000 gallons per person per month. So a family of four would use less than 8,000 gallons. If your home is using more, you may have a leak.
Water meter
  • Check the meter. Cheyenne's water meters are equipped with a flow detector. It is a red propeller or triangle on the meter's face. Turn off all water uses in the home and check the water meter. If the red triangle or propeller is spinning, you have a leak.
  • Check the toilet. Toilets are a frequent cause of higher than expected water bills in Cheyenne. Identify toilet leaks by placing a few drops of food coloring in the toilet tank. Wait 15 minutes. If the color shows up in the bowl, the toilet leaks.
Remember to flush the colored water so that it doesn't stain the toilet.
