Crystal Dam and Reservoir turns 100 years-old

CrystalReservoir - 1.jpg

In 1910, the City of Cheyenne completed its second large reservoir—Crystal Dam and Reservoir. The dam and reservoir are still in use today, but don’t mistake them for being old or outdated.

Today the dam and reservoir are high tech. The reservoir contains an aeration system that improves water taste and quality. The dam contains computerized systems that allow engineers in Cheyenne to monitor and operate the reservoir remotely and security systems that alert operators to intrusions and equipment failures.

As Cheyenne grew, so did its water needs and an extensive water system built around Crystal Dam and Reservoir. Today, this water system crosses three mountain ranges, includes 7 reservoirs, four well fields and 829 miles of pipe and a water treatment plant. All of which collect, store, treat and deliver water to over 22,000 homes, businesses and government offices in Cheyenne.

Crystal Reservoir is a great example of how Cheyenne’s water resources adapted and continues to be adapt to meet Cheyenne’s water needs.
