The Greater Cheyenne Greenway is a system of paths that serve as a gateway to the parks and neighborhoods of the community.  It provides areas for recreation, acts as an alternate transportation route, and serves as a wildlife corridor.  Most of the Greenway is located along creeks and drainages.  The path itself is a ten-foot wide concrete path with a two-foot shoulder on either side.  The Greenway -- including Greenway bridges and underpasses – complies with ADA requirements and is fully handicapped accessible.

The Greater Cheyenne Greenway is a unique destination and an amenity that showcases the quality-of-life issues that make the area such a desirable place to live and visit.  Since its beginnings in Martin Luther King Jr. Park in 1990, the greenway project has focused on water quality, aesthetic appeal, and equal access to a non-motorized transportation system for all users.

The current system includes seven main sections: Crow Creek, Dry Creek, Sun Valley, Lions Park, Allison Draw, Pointe neighborhood, and Storey & Converse Boulevards.

s

s

s
represents a novel amenity and competitive advantage in economic development in attracting new businesses.

The Greater Cheyenne Greenway has been recognized as an award-winning project.  In 1996, as a direct result of the Greenway, Cheyenne was named a "Trail Town USA by the National Park Service and the American Hiking Society.  In 1997, the Dry Creek Greenway section was given an award of excellence for best Portland cement recreation trail in a six state area.  This award was given by the Region 8 Federal Highway Administration.  In 1998, the City of Cheyenne was given an award by the Wyoming Association of Municipalities, signed by the Governor, for its successful Greenway project.

Greenway operation, maintenance and development are a function of the Parks & Recreation Department in Cheyenne. Questions may be addressed through the Parks & Recreation Administration Office, 2101 O'Neil Avenue, Room 302, Cheyenne, WY 82001, (307) 638-4379.
