BUS DRIVER

TRANSIT


Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.

DEFINITION

To provide transportation and assistance to the general public; to inspect and maintain assigned vehicle; to deliver tickets and collect money as needed; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to the area of assignment.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the full journey level class within the Bus Driver series. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from the Senior Bus Driver in that the latter is a leadworker position.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from the Transit Manager.

ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS--Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

1. Operate a City bus to transport passengers on schedule to various locations throughout the City; observe all safety precautions; communicate with other drivers and the dispatch center using a 2-way radio.

2. Perform pre-inspections on assigned vehicle; clean and refuel the bus and perform minor repairs; report any mechanical service needs.

3. Assist in loading and unloading of passengers; operate a wheelchair lift and tie down wheelchairs.

4. Collect bus fares and deliver tickets.

5. Maintain a variety of records, reports, and logs.

Marginal Functions:

1. Attend and participate in various training programs and staff meetings.

2. Access answering machine for updated schedule information; provide assistance to dispatch personnel when necessary.

3. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

Methods and techniques of bus driving and passenger assistance.
Operational characteristics of transit and dispatch equipment and tools.
Traffic laws and regulations.
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

Ability to:

Perform passenger loads and unloads.
Perform minor maintenance on passenger buses.
Interpret, explain, and enforce Department policies and procedures.
Operate a variety of transit and dispatch equipment in a safe and effective manner.
Perform pre-trip inspections of assigned vehicle.
Work independently in the absence of supervision.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:

walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time
operating assigned equipment.

Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:

making observations
communicating with others
reading and writing
operating assigned equipment.

Experience and Training Guidelines

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

Two years of increasingly responsible bus driving experience, including passenger assistance and loading.

Training:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

License or Certificate

Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license.

License or Certificate

Possession of, or ability to obtain a CDL license.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid C.P.R. and First Aid certification.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environmental Conditions:

Outdoor environment driving from site to site; exposure to inclement weather and potentially hostile situations; work closely with others in confined spaces; irregular work hours; operate machinery.

Physical Conditions:

Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for driving a vehicle; sitting for prolonged periods of time; straight pulling or pushing; light lifting and carrying; walking.
